Dusi Canoe Marathon 2015

The Dusi Canoe Marathon 2015 is the 64th edition of the epic canoe race. The race is 120km from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The 3 day event starts on 19 February and concludes on 21 February.

I decided to catch the early stages of day 1. So I crawled out of bed really early and scouted a couple of good spots, along the Msunduzi River, within walking distance of my house. I was hoping to catch the early emotions on some of the 1,400 paddler’s faces. I also wanted to see if I could get some creative shots.

My first stop was at the Ernie Pierce Weir and after that I moved down the Dusi into Alexander Park. There was a lot of smiling but I doubt that will be the case in a couple of days. Many of the more serious paddlers were showing major determination.

Anyway, other than one small slip I came out unscathed but I managed to get my shoes wet and my jeans were soaked up to the waste. In the end I got some nice shots before I had to move off and start my normal day of photography.

Thanks to Capt. Otto for watching my back in some of the more dodgy locations. Suddenly I feel like I don’t do this nearly as often as I should. Unfortunately I have other commitments so I will not be able to follow race but the Maritzburg Marathon is on Sunday so maybe I will take a few shots there. Stay tuned.
